A WEEK AT THE SEA

ENDLESS HORIZONS, ETERNAL SEARCH

Self is a sea boundless and measureless.

Childe Hassam, The South Ledges, Appledore, 1913, oil on canvas, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C.

Whenever I visit the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C., I inevitably find myself standing before The South Ledges, Appledore by American Impressionist Childe Hassam (1859-1935).  A prolific artist, Hassam executed thousands of oils, water colors, drawings, and etchings, and yet to me, this work is his finest creative expression. As if perhaps, each one of us could inhabit the painting along with the elegant lady, meditating upon the endless horizon.
