WHAT IS ART?

THE ETERNAL QUESTION

 BODY & SOUL

Man himself is the inspiration in this fourth attempt to comprehend the essence of art…..

The body always expresses the spirit whose envelope it is.  And for him who can see, the nude offers the richest meaning.

Auguste Rodin, Sculptor

Michelangelo

Michelangelo Buonarroti, David, 1501-1504, marble, Galleria dell’Accademia, Florence, Italy

Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564) and Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) may have been separated by some 300 years of history, but they shared the belief that the human body reflects the soul. Rodin worshipped Michelangelo as well, traveling as a young artist from his native France to Italy to view his predecessor’s monumental statues. Today the two sculptors’ works enjoy super star status, from Michelangelo’s Pieta and David (above) to Rodin’s The Kiss and The Thinker.
