American master John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) attained fame and fortune as the popular portraitist of the glittering, super-wealthy society of the Gilded Age. However, by 1916 when he painted his panoramic view of Canada’s Lake O’Hara in British Columbia, Sargent was attempting to shift his artistic energies to recreating the beauty of the natural environment.
