AN INVITATION FROM DEGAS
MEET YOUNG MADEMOISELLE HORTENSE
We were created to look at one another, weren’t we?*
The versatile Edgar Degas (1834-1917) created other subjects besides ballerinas. Although he never married nor had children, Degas has left us with a legacy of memorable portraits of family and friends, including the captivating daughter of Paul Valpincon (whom he had known from childhood).
*Likely from a conversation with fellow artist Walter Sickert.
