Arts Everyday Living: Van Dyck & the Art of Portraiture—Cousin of the King & His Dog

Anthony van Dyck, James Stuart, Duke of Richmond and Lennox, c. 1633-1635, oil on canvas, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York

Baroque artist Anthony van Dyck (1599-1641) might have been Flemish (born in Antwerp in modern day Belgium), but he is usually best known as court painter to the British court.  His portraits of the royal family, particularly of the doomed King Charles I (deposed and executed by his subjects in 1649), are often outstanding examples of the art of portraiture.
