Vincent van Gogh, Street in Saintes-Maries, 1888, oil on canvas, Private Collection

The main building after the old church, an ancient fortress, is the barracks.  And what houses at that…..

Vincent van Gogh, letter to brother Theo, 6/4/1888

In early June 1888, Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) journeyed from his home in Arles, in southern France, to Saintes-Maries along the Mediterranean Sea, where he produced several canvases of both the sea and the town.

In U.S. public domain.
