With the support of collectors like Eugene Murer above, Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919) and his French Impressionist colleagues survived the initial controversy caused by what was then often considered their radical artistic visions.  American artist Robert Henri (1865-1929) was a leader of the Ash Can School, a movement then criticized for its daring and realistic scenes of New York City life in the early 1900s.
